Silence, I discover has wide meaning and usefulness. People tend to use it to profess their expressions toward certain issue. Literally, it is a complete lack of noise. Though with various definitions in the english dictionary, silence conveys some form of information to the other party.
Psycologically, using “silence” in our everyday communication also depend on temperaments. The Four temperaments use (and react to) silence disparately; but this isn’t the focal of ♍♈ writing.
Personally, silence is a very powerful means of communication. I use it to communicate my response, or feelings at a particular time.
For example, I respond to questions or gists I wouldn’t want to talk about with “silence”. Doing that, I already demonstrated my unwillingness to respond. Culturally where I come from, parents tend to commune with their children with silence especially in the presence of a visitor.
Silence also indicates Contemplation – most times, introverts are usually calm and quiet thus involving mostly in mental activities. Silence, in certain situation can also represent remorse. Maybe for doing something wrongly or bad and one is being cautioned, its a sign of showing respect.
In a heated arguement as well, the quote: “silence is golden”, shows how important it is in situation of such. Silence from one party (or partner) helps in reducing the tension of the arguement, perhaps giving room for resolution.
Breaking into perpetual silence could also mean intentional rudeness. Refusing to reply to the other person is a way of ignoring them.
Using “silence” incorrectly, sometimes can be detrimental. Now this is very important: keeping quiet when you are supposed to talk is “dangerous”. The popular phrase “speak out” suggest that you condemn what is needed to. Once you can’t reject what you won’t like to take (e.g acting silent on insult from unworthy fellow), you are simply passing a message for “continual insults”.
Lastly, another destructive use of silence is your inability to ASK! I remember my mother would tell me to always ask for directions whenever in order not to get lost. This is applicable in every facet of life. I’ve always learn not to keep silent when in need; even the Bible tells us to ASK!
